Why Oasis Loves Camels

Why Oasis Loves Camels

Picking a camel as the Oasis mascot was not hard. And no, it is not because camels are associated with oases. The real reason is that camels are the world’s #1 hydrants. What does it take to be a hydration master? Let’s put it this way:

  • A camel can go 14 days without drinking water
  • A camel can drink 53 gallons of water in 3 minutes
  • A camel can lose 30% of their water weight without dying (humans die at 12% lost)
  • A camel stores all of its fat in its hump so its body stays cool and does not sweat
  • Some camel species can even hydrate off salt water—the only mammal to do so

Each decision we make here at Drink Oasis HQ is preceded by a simple question: Will this allow our customers to hydrate more like camels? If the decision is no, we don’t do it.

It goes without saying that we think camels are really cool, which is why our mascot looks so cool himself. He’s got the shades, the trendy haircut, and a bandana. Designing him, however, was not so cool. It isn’t easy to design a camel, and our graphic designer, Stanislav, worked 10 hours to make him just right. Our final camel mascot design wound up costing us $400 dollars, which was Drink Oasis’s largest ever expense at the time!

We were so happy with Stanislav’s work that we named our mascot after him. We figured the Slavic name may confuse American audiences, however, so we shortened his legal name to “Stan.” And since “Stan” and “Cam” are slant-rhymes, we christened him Stan the Cam’.

Camels are interesting in so many ways beyond their herculean hydration abilities. We’ve printed some of our favorite camel fun facts on the bottom of each Oasis pouch, so next time you hold an Oasis pouch, check out the bottom for a camel fun fact surprise! On that note, let’s end this blog post with some of our favorite camel fun facts:

  • A camel has three eyelids to protect them from sandstorms. The innermost one is even transparent!
  • A camel can seal its nostrils shut so sand doesn’t enter their nose during sandstorms.
  • A camel can run 45 miles per hour—almost twice as fast as Usain Bolt.
  • Camel mouths are as thick as leather, which allows them to consume cacti.
  • A camel is born without a hump, and slowly grows it over time.
  • A camel only has two toes on each foot to prevent them from sinking into sand.
  • A camel is on average more intelligent than a horse!
  • The closest non-extinct relative to camels are llamas.
  • The arabic language has over 100 words for a camel.
